Sharing moments in time…

There be monsters….

even if they are a little smaller than you might expect.  This is my first of many posts to come about the amazing Galapagos Islands.  The picture below is a marine iguana who is equally at home on land or at sea.  They sit out in the sun during the morning hours until they warm up and then one by one make their way to the surf.  They swim and dive underwater to get to the moss that they eat off the rocks.  We were lucky enough to not only see them on the surface but also while snorkeling underwater.  If they appear familiar to you , it is undoubtedly because they have been used as a model for many of the movie and TV monsters of the last several years.  If you want to get a close look at these guys,  click on the photo, then click on the enlarged photo to go to full size – BUT DON’T BE AFRAID!!

Chuck (Darwin) would have been proud to have this shot illustrate “Voyage” (i.e. “October (1835) – James & Charles Islands…The aquatic species is by far the most remarkable, because it is the only existing lizard which lives on marine vegetable productions.”

  2. Thanks Dr D. It was an eye-opener for us – I can only imagine what it was like for “Chuck”. It was especially interesting watching them eat while we were snorkeling with them.
