Big Red – Hawk Portrait…

I was at kind of at a minor loss for what to post today but then decided to use an image I took this morning.  We have been watching hawks in our canyon for some time.  Until a few days ago I thought there was only one pair and certainly only one species of hawk in our  neighborhood.  I had seen some things that looked different on different hawks but I had chalked that up to either age or sex differences.  Then I mentioned to a friend of mine that what I thought was a red tailed hawk was making a racket with some very loud and incessant screeching.  He told me that it was probably actually a red-SHOULDERed hawk that was making the noise.

Evidently, these hawks are seen in the eastern part of the US but they also are common in California.  In case you’re also wondering what it looks like while flying, here’s a shot as he (or she)  streaked by the front of our house.

  1. There was a period of time when we lived in CMR that we saw one of these fairly regularly in a tree or on a chimney. Such a beauty! We finally decided it had it’s eye on the neighbors’ Cairn Terriers. He eventually moved on leaving them unscathed. Watch the children!

  2. The one we’ve seen the most of is a little small to go after our compact heavyweight pups. He would pull a groin muscle trying to take off with one of them in tow….
