Weekly Photo Challenge: Colorful


Mandarin showing its true colors

As soon as I saw the subject for this week’s challenge, I knew immediately which photo I would post.  The colorful little guy you see below is a Mandarin Fish.  They are small – this one is probably less than an inch long – and very shy.  They live inside very dense coral to provide protection.  The best time to see them is at dusk when they come out and do this incredible mating ritual with the pair kind of spiraling above the reef before again darting back for cover.  This photo was taken in North Sulawesi, Indonesia in the Lembeh Straits.  The first time I saw one of these, I just couldn’t believe it was real.

    • We dove near Manado for one week then went to Lembeh. Both were excellent.
