Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects
Having just returned from a Scuba trip, this challenge plays right into my hands! The two subjects in this photo are a young lion fish which are incredibly ornate and photogenic and a like-colored crinoid (which is actually an animal like a star fish) sitting on top of some hard coral. This was taken on a night dive in Fiji on a reef just off the shore of the resort we stayed at. There were a lot of divers in the water but I saw this opportunity when I first submerged so I was able to get it before the water got stirred up – providing me with a stark black background. The photo was taken in about 25 ft of water.

Hi Siggi – I’m not sure its my world – I think the fish know that we are just brief intruders and then get together and laugh at how pitifully clumsy we are underwater.

I see that scuba diving is on your bucket list – definitely do it! Its an incredible way to visit a totally different world with all foreign creatures without leaving the earth.

Interesting photo! Sounds like you had a good dive! I like the way that the color shows up in the lion fish and the crinoid, is repeated subtly in the coral, and the contrast with the really dark background.

Thanks Pier – It was nice under there – especially after the surface debacle of trying to get about 16 divers in the water at the same time – at dusk. It was a lucky opportunity that I got to break away from the group early.
