Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreaming – of better days

Found another photo for the challenge this week while waiting for our airplane back to San Diego – with a back story.  We wandered upon this snoozy male on one of our first walks around Hallo Bay.  He was snoozing here but we had seen him the evening we arrived trying to chase a female – to no avail as his right front paw was either broken or at least badly injured.  Our guide told us that he had a fight with another male the day before and suffered that injury.  We saw him occasionally during the week and he appeared to be walking better as the week went on but it was still very questionable whether he would be able to survive.  In any case, he was resting comfortably here and hopefully dreaming of his days to come……

Wishing the best for the “dreamer”

    • RS – it was amazing – this poor bear, with hormones racing, chased a female for what had to be at least a mile – on three legs! No wonder he was tired the next day!

omg i can’t believe you can just go up to them n take their photo!!! are they dangerous?? i probly woulda tried to feed the injured bear to try to make sure he survived. but i guess he’d need a Lot of meat, huh. how close can you get to them on foot????

    • Rach – you can get fairly close. Sometimes the bears will approach you as you are photographing and its best to just let them pass by. As for the injured bear, it is all part of the natural cycle of things. Even though it is in our nature to want to help, it is better to let things take their normal course.

  4. What a beautiful bear you’ve captured there. And this poor guy was injured? I really like the way you put this title to your post. 🙂

    • RR – thank you. He seemed to be hurt pretty bad. The first night we saw him, he was chasing a female but not using that leg at all – just holding it by his side. Later in the week he was at least limping on it. I think you will be impressed by the beauty of these bears in my coming posts….they are amazing

How was it compared to the lodge last year? How was Phil? Going back?

    • Hi Ed – Living wise, it was closer to the experience up at the lake. The same kind of tents but with a communal tent for group meals and hanging out. The weather wasn’t quite as bad as our one night at the lake but it came close at times. The Bears were much more plentiful and pretty mellow (except for mating and the occasional flare up) and you don’t get the dramatic charging shots that you do in a Salmon stream. We met two great people there – a Scotsman, and an Aussie cop and had a great time with them – you would have enjoyed it. We talked briefly about another visit but nothing concrete yet other than it would probably be to another, different area. You interested?
PS – we did see another of your “dogs” 🙂

      • I’ll have to take a picture of my legs! Every morning he puts his big bear paws on me and scratches me to get me up (not intentionally). I bruise easy, so I have some pretty buises on my legs. lol

      • I think the difference is….you still have a leg 🙂
