Sharing moments in time…

About

Hi Everyone,

My name is Scott Randall and I am a retired civil servant having spent 32 years working for the U.S. Dept of the Navy.  I enjoy music (and try to play the acoustic guitar), golf, skiing, travel, and more recently photography.  Although I have “dabbled” in taking pictures over the years, I have gotten more into it since I retired and have somehow accumulated much more photography “stuff” than I ever thought possible.

I started this blog after a trip to South America and it has been a great place to share our travels to Europe, India, Alaska, the South Pacific, Africa and many places within the US of A.  You’ll probably notice that I love photographing wildlife and we have been privileged to see and photograph a wide variety of incredible animals in their natural habitat all around the world.   I also enjoy candid “people” photography and interesting landscapes so you might see some of that mixed in between the creatures.  Who knows, I might even record some of my “significantly less than professional” guitar playing and post it here some day (listener beware).

I’ve been astounded by the number and diversity of the visitors the blog has had and completely blown away by the number of folks that “follow” these pages on a regular basis.  I thank you all for your interest and support.  Our list of places (and creatures) to visit never seems to get any smaller so I hope to be able to keep sharing interesting sights and experiences with you all.

In any case, I hope you enjoy your visit and I look forward to any feedback you may have on the blog, my photography, or anything else that may strike your fancy.

Scott

      • Hi Amy – let me know what photo and what you what to use it for – shouldn’t be a problem. I just ask that you attribute the photo to me.

  3. Scott, I found your blog through Patti and my first thought as I scrolled down the front page was, ” Oh cool, another professional photographer’s page.” If this is “dabbling” I can’t wait to see what happens when you get good at it!

    • Dounia, Sorry for two things – 1) that is has taken me this long to reply to you, and 2) even though I appreciate your thoughtfulness for this nomination, I hope you don’t mind if I don’t “play” for this one after just finishing the Kreativ blogger response. I’m not sure what I would add to that response or what different people I would nominate. Again, I appreciate your nomination and hope we continue to converse over our blogs. Take care, Scott

Great blog and wonderful photos. I use a D5000 and D2X (trying sell it so I can get the 7000 or 300s). I’ve heard wonderful things about the D7000. Love your pronghorn portrait shot. We get a lot of them around the region of Co that I live in.

    June 5, 2012 at 9:46 am

    • Crystal – Thank you for your comments! Especially appreciated from such an accomplished photographer. Your horse portraits are great! You are lucky to live in Colorado – always one of my favorite places to visit and photograph.

      June 5, 2012 at 11:07 am

      • crystalwalkerphotography

Why thank you. Believe it or not I am a beginner. I started getting into photography about 3-4years ago when I first found out about there still being Wild Horses in Co. I am one of the lucky few natives.

        June 5, 2012 at 11:23 am

      • Crystal – must be an affinity between beginners (I started about a year ago) – and Nikon shooters, of course! OBTW, I really like the D7000 but then again, I don’t have a lot (other than the 5100) to compare it to.

        June 5, 2012 at 11:45 am

  20. crystalwalkerphotography

I had an Olympus before my Nikon and I hated it. Very happy with both my Nikon’s and four lens’s. Just wish I had a 500mm for photographing wild life.

    June 5, 2012 at 11:49 am

    • Yup – my 150-500mm Sigma gets a lot of use for the stuff I normally take. Not very good in low light but pretty sharp for daytime shooting – and not all that expensive.

      June 5, 2012 at 11:52 am

    • autisticaplanet

Can either of you tell me if the Nikon D7000 is something for a beginner or is there a better DSLR model for that? Thank you. -Allison

      October 9, 2013 at 12:16 am

      • Allison, The D7000 (and the newer version D7100) is considered a “higher end” consumer DSLR. The D3200 is Nikon’s current version of its entry level DSLR. Both are great cameras.

        October 9, 2013 at 2:50 pm

  21. crystalwalkerphotography

I’ve had several photography friends recommend the Sigma if I can’t get the Nikkor one. Another one on my wish list is a good Macro lens.

    June 5, 2012 at 11:54 am

    • autisticaplanet

Thank you both Scott & Crystal. I will take down that information.

  23. Hi there! This is just to let you know that because I regularly enjoy your posts, I’ve nominated you for the Kreativ Blogger Award. I hope you’ll consider this good news – but even if you aren’t interested in accepting, I hope you may see some increased traffic as a result! The acceptance rules are at: http://theretiringsort.com/2012/06/14/in-accordance-with-award-rules-the-nominees-are/
    All the best!

    June 14, 2012 at 8:30 pm

    • RS – thank you – I appreciate the interest. I hope you don’t mind if I decline the honor – but I do appreciate the nomination!

      June 25, 2012 at 9:02 pm

      • I don’t mind at all – here’s hoping the nomination got you a little new visibility, though!

        June 26, 2012 at 5:58 am

  24. Yeah Scott – I kinda wasn’t sure if you’d like it or not. I also nominated you for one – it is a lot of work. I don’t think you should have to copy and paste stuff just because someone wanted to honor you. I still did it, but you don’t have to comply with any of it. Like ‘The Retiring Sort’ said – more visibility! http://blog.caroldunniganphotography.com/2012/07/12/beautiful-blogger-award/

    July 12, 2012 at 10:22 am

    • Thanks Carol – I do appreciate the exposure and the fact that folks appreciate the blog. Its just that I think I need to focus on the content of my blog for now…. Thanks again for your recommendation!

I have always wondered (and please excuse me if I missed it), what state are you from? All my photos are from northern Illinois, where I live.

    October 9, 2013 at 12:17 am

    • Allison, I’m “from” New Jersey where I was born and raised (through college). I’ve since lived near Washington D.C., then Albuquerque New Mexico, then out in the Mojave Desert in California and finally in San Diego, California where I live now. We love it here and have no thoughts of ever leaving. I’ve been through Chicago many times but haven’t spent much time in Illinois.

Would you consider letting the Edmonton Land Trust Association use your photo of the deer jumping the barbed wire fence? We are creating a brochure that will be sent to farmers and ranchers in Central and Northern Alberta. The intent of the brochure is to safeguard wildlife passages. The brochure is being created by volunteers who hope to prevent the number of wildlife who are injured and killed by inappropriate fences, pipes and vents.
