Sharing moments in time…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Treasure

One of the things I love about photography is that you never know where or if you will find a treasured image – one that recalls the experience you had, the magic of the moment or the splendor of the subject.  Even in a place like Africa where the opportunities are endless, you never know if you will get that one “keeper”.  Even after you go through your photos a couple of times that treasure may still elude you.  That kind of happened to me as I went through my Africa portfolio – there are MANY that I think are good photos and capture the moment well but I was hoping to get at least one that I could have printed professionally to put in our own living room.  It wasn’t until I started doing a first cut of post- processing on some of the photos that I stumbled upon this one that I really liked.  I had taken a photo of a male lion sitting in the grass of the Serengeti – the light wasn’t great and he wasn’t doing much but he had this very wispy mane that I liked.  I decided to see what it would be like as a simulated oil painting using some of the photoshop tools and came up with the image below.  I love the expression in the lion’s face and the way his mane translates into brush strokes…….  I  have sent this away to be printed and am anxiously awaiting its return – hopefully to become a treasured part of our living room decor.

    • Amanda – I appreciate your comment! I have another photo of the same lion that I took a couple of seconds before this one and processed completely differently – in B&W. I really like that photo also but this one really talks to me… 🙂

    • Thanks Max. He kinda posed nicely and I was lucky enough to catch it. I must admit that the processing I did to it was lucky – a week before I took this I didn’t even know that there was a way to simulate an oil painting!

    • Thanks Colline – we saw MANY, MANY lions during our trip but this is the only one that had such an unusual pose. His windblown hairdo was also “fetching”…..

      • I agree with you on that 🙂

  9. I see why you treasure this – and I wasn’t even there. Beautiful. The way he’ s looking upwards makes his expression very unusual for a lion – at least I think so. I have never tried photoshop…

    • Ann-Christine – yup – the expression is everything. My friends always wonder why I take quick sequences of photos of an animal – it is in the hopes of catching that one, fleeting look. I normally use photoshop sparingly – as a matter of fact I used the “oil painting” tool for the first time only a few days before I took this photo. I really liked the effect on the hair….

    • Thanks Nora! I once saw a quote from a professional photographer that said “if you want to take better pictures, go stand if front of better subjects…” That is true in this case…. 🙂

I would be surprised if you didn’t have enough wonderful photos to line ll the walls in your house as well as all the neighbors! You really should consider selling your prints. Do you participate in any photo contests? If so, can you share where? This looks like something out of National Geographic.

    • Hi Allison – Thanks for your very kind comments. We live in a very small house with not much wall space. In addition, over the years we have purchased some reasonable (inexpensive but nice) art which has had a long term place on our walls. Over the last year or so, I think some on my photos (especially when connected to our own experiences) have rivaled that art. About two months ago, I replaced on old print we had framed with one of my own prints – it is in a hallway where no-one but me is likely to notice it. This Africa photo (hopefully) will be the first one that gets a prominent place in the house where maybe other people can also see and enjoy it. I’ve also had other photos printed and given them to friends with a particular interest in one of my subjects. I’ve sold a few photos to magazines and donated some to good causes but otherwise haven’t pursued the sales thing – its not that I haven’t thought about it, but I’m not sure its worth the effort it might take – besides, I would only sell things at my cost to produce them – I have no desire to “make money” in photography . I feel the same about contests. I also produce a calendar every year for my friends that seems to be popular as people keep asking me for more of them. In any case, I’m very happy that the people that come to this blog enjoy my hobby – If I were to formally offer to produce any of my prints, I would probably offer them to people here first. Again, thank you so much for your comment – it has made my day!
