We have been very lucky in “treating”ourselves to a couple of recent trips (hence my lack of posts). We first had the opportunity to go on a short notice trip to the Baja in Mexico to spend some time with Whale Sharks.
These incredible creatures come in close to the shore in the Sea of Cortez to feast on the plankton in the water. While that is great for the giant fish (not either whales or sharks), it is horrible for underwater photography due to the lack of visibility caused by the plankton. This photo was taken from our boat which was about 18 feet long – this whale shark was longer than the boat – about 22 feet in length.
From the surface they appear to be hardly moving but when you get in the water to snorkel with them, you quickly realize that they are hard to keep up with and that they can disappear in seconds with one flip of their enormous tails or by just sinking down into the cloudy water.
In any case, it was a tremendous treat to spend some time with these very gentle giants. I’ll post some other photos from our lodge tomorrow and explain a little more about this wonderful trip.
Here’s my photo for this week’s challenge: “Shadowed.” This cheetah was examining a tree in the Serengeti and it cast just enough shadows to make this a dramatic photo which highlighted the incredible eyes of this svelte predator. Of all the cheetah photos we took during our trip a year ago, this may be my favorite……
I’m late again this week but finally got around to looking at this week’s challenge, “Warmth.” Warmth always makes me think of Balmy evenings on the beach in a tropical local. This photo is from Taveuni, Fiji on just such a night. The storms off the coast cooperated and lit up the skies with a nice display of warm colors.
In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Yellow.” Whenever I see one of the these Challenges that are color related, I almost always turn to my photos from India. I found the colors there to be extraordinary everywhere you looked. I can always find a photo which highlights any color selection imaginable – so a yellow themed photo was easy to find. This photo was taken in the early morning as the crowds were assembling on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi. Everyone was headed for their morning prayers and baths in the sacred river. These ladies caught my eye as we passed by because of their stunning yellow saris.
Here’s my post for this weeks challenge, Twinkle. While stars twinkle, so do the lights on the Charles Bridge in Prague. We were out on this dreary, rainy night but there weren’t many other people. That gave us the opportunity to catch this twinkling scene including the reflections off the cobblestone surface of the bridge.
