Pronghorns…
One of the first animals we saw “on the hoof” during our recent car trip were the pronghorns that graze on the plains. I have always thought that these were a member of the antelope family but I discovered that they are not antelope at all. They are distinguished in that they may be the second fastest land animal (to the African Cheetah). I took this photo of a group not far off of I-70 in Utah. There were probably about 20 of them in total.

I saw a couple of pronghorns but couldn’t stop – then spotted these near a construction area where I could pull off – nicely highlighted with the mountains in the background.

Lovely photo! I remember seeing a segment about pronghorns on television not too long ago. Their migratory patterns are one of the longest of any land mammal, but it has been disrupted by development and fences. Some of them have been outfitted with GPS so their routes can be tracked and better understood.

It is amazing that they are not good jumpers and therefore bound by fences. I understand that some farmers and other landowners, including the government, are removing the lower parts of fences to allow their movement. They crawl under the fences instead of trying to jump.
